Every Elixir project.
With the right OTP.

Manage Elixir with vfox or mise, with clear Erlang/OTP dependencies and project versions. Choose source builds, Windows installation or Hex prebuilt packages.

Plugin minimum: vfox 0.5.3. Use current vfox for the commands in this guide.

Erlang/OTP comes first

Elixir builds depend on Erlang/OTP. The plugin declares this dependency; choose a compatible OTP version before installation.

[ 02 ]

Source or prebuilt

Install from source by default, or use Hex builds with VFOX_ELIXIR_MIRROR=hex.

[ 03 ]

One plugin, two tools

Install Elixir through vfox or mise and run elixir, elixirc and mix.

01 / GET STARTED

A few commands. Then you’re in.

Check the platform requirements, then choose your version manager. The examples pin a version; search to find other available releases.

01 Add the plugin and dependencies
vfox add erlang
vfox add elixir
vfox install erlang@26.2.3
eval "$(vfox activate bash)"
vfox use -g erlang@26.2.3
02 Install a version
vfox install elixir@1.16.2
03 Run and verify
vfox exec elixir@1.16.2 -- elixir --version
01 Prepare the environment
mise use -g vfox:version-fox/vfox-erlang@26.2.3
02 Install and select a version
mise use -g vfox:version-fox/vfox-elixir@1.16.2
03 Run in the selected environment
mise exec -- elixir --version

02 / EVERYDAY DEVELOPMENT

From the first install to your daily run.

Keep the version with the project

Initialize vfox in Bash and select the project version. With mise, use mise use to select a version for the current project.

Bash
eval "$(vfox activate bash)"
vfox use -p elixir@1.16.2
vfox exec elixir -- elixir --version

Use Hex prebuilt packages

Use the same mirror option for search and installation, and choose a build matching your installed OTP.

Bash
VFOX_ELIXIR_MIRROR=hex vfox search elixir
VFOX_ELIXIR_MIRROR=hex vfox install elixir@main-otp-26
WINDOWS / OTP

Match the OTP version on Windows

Activate Erlang first, then install an Elixir version with an OTP suffix. This example pairs Elixir 1.16.2 with OTP 26.

Use vfox search elixir to find available version names.

PowerShell
Invoke-Expression "$(vfox activate pwsh)"
vfox use -g erlang@26.2.3
vfox install elixir@1.16.2-elixir-otp-26
vfox exec elixir@1.16.2-elixir-otp-26 -- elixir --version

Prebuilt packages still require compatible Erlang/OTP. Avoid incompatible OTP major versions.

03 / GOOD TO KNOW

Less guessing. More building.

How do I find other versions?

Run vfox search elixir or mise ls-remote vfox:version-fox/vfox-elixir to find available versions.

Why is Erlang required first?

Elixir runs on the Erlang VM, and source builds require Erlang tools. Choose versions using the official compatibility table.

Do Hex prebuilt packages still need OTP?

Yes. The otp-N suffix must match the Erlang/OTP major version in your runtime environment.

How do I update the plugin?

Run vfox update elixir. The plugin checks the manifest published in this repository.
