Build OTP for your environment

Unix installations build from source by default. Adjust configuration with OTP_CONFIGURE_ARGS.

Ubuntu uses builds for the selected distribution; macOS uses erlef/otp_builds.

Pin Erlang/OTP with vfox or mise, then choose a compatible Elixir version.

01 / GET STARTED

A few commands. Then you’re in.

Check the platform requirements, then choose your version manager. The examples pin a version; search to find other available releases.

01 Add the plugin and dependencies

02 / EVERYDAY DEVELOPMENT

From the first install to your daily run.

Keep the version with the project

Initialize vfox in Bash and select the project version. With mise, use mise use to select a version for the current project.

Control the source build

MAKEFLAGS controls parallelism; OTP_CONFIGURE_ARGS is passed to OTP configuration. Use build options supported by the target OTP version.

PREBUILT / UNIX

Choose a prebuilt installation

On Ubuntu, select the target distribution. On macOS, any non-empty USE_PREBUILT_OTP value enables prebuilt mode with architecture detection.

Keep USE_PREBUILT_OTP consistent for search and installation. Disable the vfox search cache first.

The Ubuntu example is for Ubuntu 22.04 only. Use the matching distribution value elsewhere; on macOS, use USE_PREBUILT_OTP=true.

How do I find other versions?

Run vfox search erlang or mise ls-remote vfox:version-fox/vfox-erlang to find available versions.

Does the default installation build from source?

Linux and macOS build from source by default. Windows uses upstream EXE installers; Unix offers prebuilt modes.

How can I reduce build time?

Set MAKEFLAGS=-jN for parallel builds, or choose a prebuilt package matching your system and OTP version.

How do I update the plugin?

Run vfox update erlang. The plugin checks the manifest published in this repository.
