Every etcd version.
Ready for your next test.

Manage etcd, etcdctl and etcdutl with vfox or mise. Install release binaries or build a failpoint version for robustness testing.

Plugin minimum: vfox 0.3.0. Use current vfox for the commands in this guide.

Server and tools, together

The etcd release package supplies the server, etcdctl and etcdutl.

Build for robustness testing

On Unix-like systems, BUILD_WITH_FAILPOINT=yes enables a source build.

Your tools, your choice

Use the vfox: backend in mise without maintaining a second plugin.

01 / GET STARTED

A few commands. Then you’re in.

Check the platform requirements, then choose your version manager. Release examples pin a version; failpoint mode builds the upstream default branch.

01 Add the plugin and dependencies
vfox add --source https://github.com/version-fox/vfox-etcd/archive/refs/heads/main.zip etcd
02 Install a version
vfox install etcd@3.5.5
03 Run and verify
vfox exec etcd@3.5.5 -- etcd --version
01 Prepare the environment
mise ls-remote vfox:version-fox/vfox-etcd
02 Install and select a version
mise use -g vfox:version-fox/vfox-etcd@3.5.5
03 Run in the selected environment
mise exec -- etcd --version

02 / EVERYDAY DEVELOPMENT

From the first install to your daily run.

Keep the version with the project

Initialize vfox in Bash and select the project version. With mise, use mise use to select a version for the current project.

Bash
eval "$(vfox activate bash)"
vfox use -p etcd@3.5.5
vfox exec etcd -- etcd --version

Verify the client tools

Run the tools in the selected environment with exec, without relying on global PATH.

Bash
vfox exec etcd@3.5.5 -- etcdctl version
vfox exec etcd@3.5.5 -- etcdutl version
FAILPOINT / UNIX

Prepare etcd for fault injection

Set the build option before installation, then expose a local failpoint endpoint through GOFAIL_HTTP.

Failpoint mode clones the upstream default branch; the requested version labels the installation, without selecting that source version. Prepare Git, GNU Make and the Go version required by that branch’s go.mod.

Bash
BUILD_WITH_FAILPOINT=yes vfox install etcd@3.5.5
GOFAIL_HTTP="127.0.0.1:22381" vfox exec etcd@3.5.5 -- etcd

Use a fresh installation: an already installed version must be uninstalled before changing build mode. This example starts etcd in a test environment; press Ctrl+C to stop.

03 / GOOD TO KNOW

Less guessing. More building.

How do I find other versions?

Run vfox search etcd or mise ls-remote vfox:version-fox/vfox-etcd to find available versions.

Which platforms support failpoint builds?

Unix-like systems only. Normal Windows installation uses upstream release archives.

Which commands are installed?

Release packages provide etcd, etcdctl and etcdutl. Run them with vfox exec or mise exec.

How do I update the plugin?

Run vfox update etcd. The plugin checks the manifest published in this repository.
